Every New Year brings with it New laws. This year there are several new laws that
have direct interest here in the Sacramento
area – two in the area of DUI prosecutions.
The first – a pilot program in Sacramento that requires first time offenders
to install and use an ignition interlock
device. Persons who have prior
convictions will be required to use the ignition interlock devices for longer
periods of time. (VC §§ 13386 and 23576.)
The second law has better news. In certain circumstances the period one must
wait to request a restricted license
may be shortened if certain conditions are met.
(VC §§ 13352, 13352.5, 23109, 23550, 23552, 23566 and 23568.)
Other new laws of interests.
Weapons on School
grounds. Possession of razor blades
and box cutters are now on the list of prohibited “weapons” on a school campus
Sport Betting Pools. While still illegal, friendly sports betting
pools such as March Madness and Super Bowl pools are now infractions punishable
by a fine not to exceed $250.
Domestic Violence. Persons charged with misdemeanor domestic
violence may not be released on their own recognizance until they first appear
before a judge or commissioner.
